OUR LIBRARY

Official Handover of the Carter Primary School Library Alexandra, Gauteng on the 27th July 2016. With funding and support provided by CSX, Metrofile Holdings, Abacus Space Solutions, Breadline Africa, Network BBDO (through their MAL Foundation) and Macmillan Education, SHOUT officially handed over its fifth S.E.E.D library to Carter Primary School in Gauteng Province.

S.E.E.D LIBRARY DONATION

"S.E.E.D" is an acronym for Supplementary Extended Education Device, but metaphorically also refers to the "germination of knowledge". Other S.E.E.D libraries launched under the SHOUT brand are: Eisleben Primary School in Mitchells Plain, Western Cape (March 2014); Somelulwazi Primary School in Soweto, Gauteng Province (April 2014); Pondo Primary School in Phalaborwa, Limpopo Province (August 2014) and TT Lekalake Primary School in Kuruman, Northern Cape Province (January 2016). Breadline Africa was the facilitating partner for each of these library placements.

INISDE THE LIBRARY

Located in Alexandra, South Africa's oldest township, Carter Primary was originally designed to accommodate 880 learners. This year, 1 364 learners are enrolled at the school. Breadline Africa provided 1 000 books for the launch and facilitated training for school staff to manage the library. The school is keen to extend its library resources by adding books published in isiZulu and Setswana.

FOUNDATION PHASE LIBRARY

A colourful and inviting reading corner for Foundation Phase learners has also been set up in the library by Macmillan South Africa. School management has committed to revising its school timetable in the near future, to ensure that every learner has weekly access to the library. One year ago, fundraising for this project began in earnest with the Light the Night. Brighten a Life Walk held in Johannesburg. The launch of this library is testament to what happens when South Africans take up the challenge to contribute to redesigning communities and providing opportunities for South Africa's youth.
